The outer ankle is one location that accesses the bladder energy meridian which is paired with the kidney which it will also influence. One of the acupuncture points we access, the bladder channel, is through Jin Shin Jyutsu location #16 on the outer ankle, which correlates to the needling points BL 60, 61, 62.
This channel runs up the back of the body paralleling the spinal cord and has a great influence on the sympathetic and parasympathetic trunks of the autonomic nervous system.
One of the many things controlled by the autonomic nervous system via the hypothalamus is digestion and metabolism. It is known that the Hypothalamus influences the feedback cycle controlling insulin levels in the body. There have been many studies of the effect of the autonomic nervous system and weight gain. What we have found is that by balancing the meridians associated with the autonomic nervous system, the eating patterns, and energy levels of individuals have naturally improved resulting in weight loss. The reverse would theoretically be true since the same meridians would affect general weight imbalance, so depending on the issue with the meridian, weather deficient in energy causing weight gain, or excessive in energy causing issues gaining weight, the balancing of the channel or highway would correct the problem.
This ankle location (#16 outer ankle) affects the hypothalamus of which one of its many influences is controlling the body’s weight and appetite.
The outer ankle location (#16) also affect gallbladder meridian points which also influence the liver. The locations on the outer ankle would be GB points 40, and 41.
This meridian is in charge of the ‘Central Clearing Department’ in Chinese medicine. It has an effect on the lymphatic system to clear out toxic byproducts. This meridian helps the liver do its job of getting rid of impurities as well as helping the liver perform its other various and important tasks, one of which is its influence on the body’s glucose and insulin levels.
The gallbladder also helps the digestion of fats, breaking them up so they can be assimilated properly. If the bile of the gallbladder doesn’t break up fats we wouldn’t get the full value of what we eat. Stimulated by eating a meal, bile acids are released into the small intestine where fats are emulsified breaking them down to smaller droplets spread over a wider surface area making them more workable for the enzymes to break them down allowing absorption. When the body is able to process the foods properly, getting the nutrients to where they are needed, cravings decrease because the body is satisfied. With proper nutrient assimilation general energy is improved.
This location on the outer ankle (#16) as stated prior also helps “take the trash out”. This helps weight loss. It’s scientifically known that toxins effects weight. The body stores toxin in the fat cells. Certain chemicals that we are all exposed to interfere with the body’s ability to run properly. One example of this is PCB. It is known that PCB’s can block the thyroid from working properly affecting metabolism and thus weight gain. It’s also known that PCB’s can cause diabetes, affecting the blood sugar levels. Through use of the Jin Shin Jyutsu point at the outer ankle the body is assisted in toxin removal by the strengthening of the gallbladder and liver meridians. This location would even have some positive effects on the blood by enhancing the livers ability to filter impurities out.
The outer ankle location is also responsible for a healthy lymphatic system which has also been associated with weight loss.
